          The client

IT supports teaching, safeguarding and administration

St Mary's RC Primary School in Langley serves approximately 470 pupils from Nursery to Year 6. Its purpose is to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment, support pupils' development and work closely with parents, carers and the wider community.

Technology sits across that work. Interactive classroom equipment, educational applications, online resources and assessment tools support teaching and learning. KS2 pupils use Chromebooks and iPads to build digital skills, complete coursework, research topics and take part in online activities.

The same environment supports pupil information, attendance, safeguarding, parent and staff communication, finance, reporting and statutory requirements. Reliability and security therefore affect both classroom learning and the operation of the school.

          Results and impact

More reliable systems and a proactive support model

The school reported improvements in the reliability, security and overall management of its IT. Proactive maintenance and monitoring reduced downtime, while issues were identified and resolved more quickly.

Cyber security measures, safeguarding tools and practical guidance gave leaders more confidence in the environment. Remedian also helped the school move from individual fixes to a strategic approach, so infrastructure decisions could reflect the needs of pupils and staff over time.

That support allows teachers and administrators to concentrate on their work instead of carrying the uncertainty of unresolved IT problems or unclear ownership.

          Security and safeguarding

Monitoring, filtering and anti-phishing controls working together

Regular security updates, proactive maintenance and advice on data protection, account access, backups and cyber security good practice reduced the risk of avoidable disruption. The school said this gave staff confidence that systems and information were being managed properly.

Smoothwall provides visibility of online activity and helps identify safeguarding concerns, inappropriate content access and unusual behaviour. Real-time alerts support prompt intervention, while reporting tools help the school review patterns rather than treat every event in isolation.

Firewall and filtering controls, together with Barracuda Sentinel anti-phishing protection, support the school's progress towards the DfE digital and technology standards. They should not be described as proof of blanket DfE compliance because the standards cover a broader set of technical and operational requirements.

          Prevention in practice

The important outcome was the incident that did not happen

In the interview, St Mary's reported no serious IT or cyber security incidents during its time with Remedian. The school attributed that position to regular maintenance, security updates, continuous monitoring and preventative work that addressed issues before they became major problems.

That is a report from the school at the time of the case study, not a promise that incidents can never occur. The practical result was less disruption to teaching and learning, more reliable systems and reassurance that risks were being actively managed.

          Strategic planning

Weekly conversations and an annual technology review

The Business Manager and onsite engineer typically meet each week to discuss current issues, emerging needs and possible improvements. Those conversations give day-to-day support a strategic element and stop smaller concerns disappearing between visits.

An annual review with the Client Manager covers hardware, software, network infrastructure and the wider IT plan. Equipment approaching end of life can be identified early, allowing the school to budget and schedule replacements instead of reacting to an unexpected failure.

This planning gives the school a clearer view of future requirements and helps keep technology secure, reliable and suitable for both staff and pupils.

          The partnership

Clear advice from a team that understands the school

St Mary's values the team's approachable, responsive and professional manner. The school said engineers listen, explain recommendations clearly and work collaboratively on practical solutions.

Openness and transparency also matter. The relationship built over time gives Remedian a working knowledge of the school's systems and priorities, while the school has confidence that recommendations are being made in its interests.

“I would highly recommend working with Remedian. Their team is friendly, approachable and professional.”
